A Gabion Morning

Esther Biro, Crew Alpha

7/7/23

When we first packed into out campsite at Mt. Elbert and I saw the gabion cages– large, unwieldy, 35 pound metal fence like things– my heart fell. One of the hardest hikes of my RMYC season last year was carrying these cages up, and I never thought I’d have to do it again.

I woke up the next morning dreading the hike. We strapped the gabions on and they were heavy, as expected. But unexpectedly, I had a wonderful time. It actually felt good to work hard in good company.

I never thought I would say this… but I hope we carry gabions up to the worksite next hitch too.
