An Ode to the Raisin

What is a raisin? In the simplest form, it is merely a dried up grape; nothing more, nothing less—but not to me.
A raisin to me is so much more. A raisin is more than just sustenance. It is more than a dried up, neglected piece of fruit.
A raisin is like your favorite grandma. Though “dried” up and no longer youthful, still all the more sweet and full of life. A raisin is like your forgotten hometown, while “ugly” it may be on the outside, still dear to you as it was where life first began and the world was introduced to the first and only you there will ever be. A raisin is like the memories forged on an RMYC crew, though they will become “old” and distorted as time passes, the essence and sweetness will never cease to be.
Next time you grasp a raisin in between your palm, remember that it can be much more than a second-rate piece of fruit. A raisin is symbolic of the melancholic nature of life, the surface level of life and a raisin are not the most appealing. But, if you can dig just a little deeper, you will find that—just as the sweetness is found inside the raisin—so is the nectar of life. That is to say joy and happiness can be found when one can look past the surface and realize that there is beauty and sweetness to be experienced, in things that may not initially give the appearance that they could contain such things.
A raisin is both fruit and life, never discount either for their appearance. Both are full of more sweetness and joy than one could ever anticipate.
