Food for thought...

Never have I ever been more overwhelmed yet excited about grocery shopping in my life. Marching around the store knowing that you're about to drop $400 on FOOD is a thrill unmatched by anything else. With a list in one hand a a bottle of whatever non-water drink that we've been craving all week in the other, we roam the aisles looking for 10lb bags of potatoes and industrial-sized tubs of peanut butter. We bond over favorite brands, go-to cereals, and trail-mixes of choice. Ignoring all the double-takes from the more civilized customers, we place 40+ apples in the cart with pride. Who cares if we're also a little smelly?

Grocery shopping can be a ruthless sport. Diving for the last bag of bagels, deciding what to put back when we've gone over budget, and settling for off-brand foods because they're much cheaper are all challenges that we must face when buying in bulk for 10 hungry crew members. And no, not everyone is going to be happy when part of the budget is washed up on tuna and pickles (me), but sooner or later it'll be their turn to pick a meal and you can bet it's going to be incredible (mac n' cheese, here we come!)

Grocery shopping sure can be a challenge sometimes. It can be hard work, a little frustrating, and definitely not always go according to plan. But the friendships you make, the lessons you learn, and the sense of accomplishment you feel when you've budgeted justttt right are simply priceless. In a way, I guess you could compare the experiences of grocery shopping with the experiences of working with RMYC as a trail crew member.

Hmmmm.... food for thought.
