Great Sand Dunes: CC Bravo

By Erik Kasperowski

There is something majestic about the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Even on the approach from many miles away, the towering dunes stand tall at the forefront of the Rocky Mountains near Crestone, Colorado. Pictures don’t do this natural wonder justice. Seeing these dunes is a remarkable experience but the greater journey lies right over the first massive dune.

As you hike over the top of the shifting sands you are at the mercy of the wind and sun. Like hiking through an endless desert, exhaustion falls upon the legs. Even the shortest distance is complicated as you slowly ascend into the sky. When you finally rise over the peak, an endless abyss of sand awaits. The unexpected vastness of the dunes is awe inspiring. It allows for a deeper level of contemplation about the wonders of nature.

On the outside the dunes are already unbelievable but sometimes it takes an extra endeavor or journey to truly witness the something in its rawest form. Sometimes you must go out of your comfort zone and into the unknown. Sometimes the journey isn’t pleasant but the reward that lies at the end is the true gift. The Great Sand Dunes is all the more rewarding because of this.
